Certified Instructors

Each PMPEI course is taught by instructors who take an intensive 18-hour “Train-the-Trainer” course to prepare them to teach a specific course. A modest registration fee is charged, and applicants must agree to remain an instructor for two years. The goal of the training is to insure the quality and uniformity of instruction statewide.

To be eligible to become a Certified PMPEI Instructor an applicant must have a minimum of five years experience in Pennsylvania planning or land use regulation. Any background is acceptable, but the majority of instructors are professional planners. Persons experienced in municipal administration, zoning administration, attorneys, planning commissioners and zoning board members also are certified to teach courses.

At the “Train-the-Trainer” new instructors are not only prepared to teach the course content, but they also learn basic concepts of adult education and how to use a variety of techniques in their teaching. Each course uses exercises and problem-solving discussions to make them interesting and focused on real community planning issues.

PMPEI courses are team taught by two instructors certified to teach the course. Working as a team they bring varied points of views and experiences to the class and keep it interesting. Instructors are compensated for teaching, and they receive auto mileage and a meal allowance.

Train-the-Trainer classes are held on an “as needed basis,” but there is usually one class a year. For information about Train-the-Trainer check the website periodically.
